Package Redesign

Package Redesign ⋆

the problem

To redesign the cover for Queen’s album The Greatest Hits. The album cover did not reflect the band or what the collection was about. The cover was just a photo of the band with the title of the album. The art, as is, would not catch a potential customer’s eyes. The Greatest Hits album is a collector’s item as well as a sum of their most popular songs. The art should be something that the customer wants to display as decoration. The goal of the redesign was to create a design that would boost sales and represent the band.

Final Mockup Cover and Record

Final Mockup Back and Record

To begin the redesign, the first step was to start visual research on album covers from that era, more recent ones, and past Queen albums. It was shown that Queen favored using images and having basic designs. I believe this did not reflect the originality of Queen and how they were as performers. The next step in the research process was to focus on the target market and the band.

the process

I began to sketch out possible design ideas and created three compositions. I decided to run with the idea of trying to focus on how original they were. I chose various images and assets I wanted to use by looking at their most iconic moments.

The first style was a sleek black and white look to match their rock and roll aesthetic with outlines of famous photos of the band. The second was a groovy seventies vibe to match the era they were popular. The third design was based off a newspaper article layout. I chose this design to go with the idea of a summary and celebration of their greatest moments.

the solution

For the final album cover redesign, I decided to move forward with the third composition. After critiques, I included headlines on the record, made the headline bold, tracked headline on back, and fixed the quote on the back cover.

I felt that the newspaper article reflected what the album was about. Queen was always in the news when they were releasing music and they still are today. There is no denying how impactful they were in the music industry and how they continue to set the standard for performers. This design not only reflected the album, but it is a design people would want to buy to keep as a collector’s item.

the impact

The design was overall well received when I presented it to others. Queen fans in particular, because it encompassed what they love about the band.

This project solidified my career goals. I knew I wanted to be a graphic designer in the music industry, but after doing this project it confirmed what I wanted to do. This project made me look at hierarchy in a new way. As I was designing a mockup newspaper, I had to look at headers and body text. Newspapers are also very reliant on grids, so I had to work with those in order to get an organized layout. Overall, this project helped me improve my design skills and confirmed my career aspirations.
